Reviews for Paradise Lost - Gothic:
A great album. It got me into this kind of music and i guess it was the first to begin the genre of gothic metal
although at that time i refer to it as atmospheric death.
The dark aura and very heavy music combine with excellent songs as Shattered, s/t, The Painless...Doomy lyrics and
artwork something beyond definition.
All Time Classic.

"Gothic", "Icon" and "Shades of God" that's the trinity of classics of doom metal. Unfortunately, the band changed the style and not to the right direction, I could say. I suppose that the majority of doom metal bands followed PARADISE LOST more or less, particularly "Gothic". The stuff of the album is really great and expressive like architectural monuments of Gothic style. Despite the current drastical experiments with the music the band will remain among the pioneers of doom metal. But it should be better for PL to return to the great period of "Gothic"...

This is what art can do: turn 3 chords into a masterpiece!
Pure death/doom depression, through corrosive guitars and cave-like vocals. Great lyrics and a terrific negative mood.
I wish they could do it again and again.
It's a shame they tried to become the new Depeche Motherfuckin' Mode after this (and the following) album.

I've always heard it was a classic and the best paradise lost album, but honnestly i've been a bit disapointed; It's not bad, but somewhat inequal... Despise the use of atmospheric elements such as female vocals and synth, it's not as deep and loud as lost paradise.

Good album, but I prefer Lost Paradise. Notice that the sound of double bass is quite unhearable....

A true Doom Masterpiece. It's the first album in Doom with a female voice, and what superb efect in that supreme track that is «gothic». If you want the first really good Death/Doom album, this is the one.

Great concept, vocals and fiffs. Unfortunately Aaron fucked up all the rhuthm guitar and Greg had to play some for him so guitarely it's a crap. But I love it. As music has its unique mood the quality of production doesn't matter.

Best album from a band who once were my favourite band. It's so intensively dark and brutal. Makes me feel like being in a tomb. This album along with Shades of god and Icon are truly masterpieces. Draconian times is ok but losing some of the edge. And unfortunately PL just went downhill after that. Why does the greatest doom metal band ever suddenly play popmusic?!
