Bathory's third album
recorded in 1986 in Heavenshore Studio in Sweden and released in 1987
This record together with Mayhem's Deathcrush spawned the black metal genre and since then the world was never the same again.
The music is mostly fast, the sound quality is terrible which is great.
A great song here that is one of my favourite ever is the slow, Satanic, breathtaking, mind-fucking masterpiece "Enter the Eternal Fire".

This album was the first 'ultimate' death/black album, it changed the way on how death/black metal is written, played and produced. fav song EQUIMANTHORN... warning don't buy this album its probably too heavy for you especially for new aged Metallica fans, it will burn your delicate new aged Metallica ears ;-)/'''''

This album is the black metal archetype….And here you’d recognize the familiar sound of bands such as Mayhem , Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Dark Throne, Satyricon, Dark Funeral, etc.
Bathory established the norms of how a black metal band should sound like, and became a legend as one of the foundations of the Genre.
But let’s put some shit together before I finish this review, Venom and Celtic Frost deserve to be called to be the creators of the occult, satanic and pagan heavy metal, but Bathory added the evil atmosphere that is so common nowadays.
So kids, if you though that the Black Metal was a Norwegian tradition you’re wrong, and for all that believed that Morbid, Mayhem, Dark Throne or Marduk are the origin of all evil in music, you have to do your own research…(Nothing against Marduk, in fact “heaven shall burn” and “internal eternal” are pretty good records!)

“Under the sign…” is a much more power full and melodic Bathory-release than the previous. I enjoy listen to this one, it contains so much angriness, hate and glory, so you simply can’t avoid to rock ahead! Prepare the creepy and black night for the band and the “woman of dark desires”.

9 out of 10

Holy Shit!! This album is fucking great! This is one of the greatest Black Metal albums ever! To me not as good as the Return, but I take it over so many bands. 9.5/10

for me before scandanivian black metal assault at the world(after years 1990)best black metal album at the metal music history.all songs are cult!

this is 90's black metal, as one can listen to in darkthrone albums, but recorded in the mid 80'...
something's already anticipating the great stylistic shift of blood fire death, but everything's embraced in dark cold rawness.
great.great.

This album solidified Bathory's place in Black Metal history. While the first 2 releases saw Quorthon breaking new ground, Under The Sign Of The Black Mark tied it all together. After this release, Quorthon decided to go in a different direction with Pagan/Viking themes. This recording is a MUST-HAVE.

The first point of transition for Bathory. The sound has become more dynamic as opposed to the monotone drumming on previous recordings. This album has some of their best songs, Equimanthorn, Call from the Grave, 13 candles, etc.. It doesn't have the signature viking sound found on latter releases and is black metal to the core. A must have.
