I think that this is a really great album. Especially I like the raw sound of this CD. Just I would prefer more songs with lyrics, as the vocals are excellent, and not so many instrumental songs.
My favourite tracks are - the first one (goddamn name) and Dauden. I think that any BM fan should not be dissapointed.

Raw violence and glorious melody melt in this, the first album from Borknagar, and what a way to start! they didn't even had a demo, and if these songs were meant to be kind of a demo, then you get why are these guys so worshipped. Many aspects can be highlighted; one of them is the vocals, and the other, the composition. Garm uses his low register monk vocals every once in a while, but his trollish screams are just predominant, and what a performance, I would place him between the 5 top vocalists of the blackmetal scene.
And the epic songs, well, Borknagar have always been so adept to what they do, so this is an excellent first effort than must be checked out.

Garm is on vocals here - what else you need ? If only the album had better production...

Borknagar - Borknagar

The Borknagar 'demo' (self-titled) has unique production. It's not crystal-clear, but it has absorbed tons of atmosphere in it. The gift of good songwriting is a bit lacked on this album. The poor mixing of the guitar blurrs the melodies and therefore it's not very enjoyable to concentrate on the riffs.

The vocalwork is enjoyable. Garm's screams sound very grim, and for the consolation, he shows his monk-chanted low and high clean vocals, which are best heard on "Döden", the best track from this album. Grim's (a.k.a. Erik) drums are at their best speed and well-played. They remind me of Faust's work on "In the Nightside Eclipse" by Emperor.

Overall, it's a good album, not excellent but good. There is not enough interesting melodies at sound, but songs like "Vintervredols Själesang", "Svartskogs Gilde" and "Dauden" guarantee the quality of this album. Recommended.

Basically, I don't like Broknaga late music, but I can't deny their self title album is a sold album, and the raw feeling + the atmosphere of their music is great. Nice acoustic guitar too !! Highly recommend !!!

It seems to me Borknagar can do no wrong.I have yet to hear anything that is not above the line of awesome. This album being a debut you would expect some mistakes here and there maybe an average track or 2, but they simply are not there. The vocals as you mighthave guessed are your usual BM vocals .But what really makes this album is the instruments they are used to such affect that vocals need not be there. This a brilliant debut by a brilliant band and MUST be checked out.

Borknagars Blackest release, in my opinion, my favourite Borknagar release... Garm on vocals, blastbeats, blazing guitars, grim sound quality... very atmospheric. I especially like the guitar work, nice and flowing, it carries you away... Definantly not as keyboard orientated as their later releases, Borknagar were much closer to their Black Metal roots on this album.

I really need to listen to this album more. It is fantastic in so many ways that its hard to describe. Garm is superb as always. The viking folk elements presents are glorious. The ferocity and hatred marvelous. It just great black metal in the viking vein. Enjoy
