Your Review:

This is Cradle's first official cd. It's very different from the second one, The Principle(...) is a dirtier black metal, more underground. The female vocals aren't played by Sarah, but they aren't too bad either. The instrumental is a more rough black metal, and Nicholas is already a great drum player. He just got much better in the later cds.
Dani's vocals are very dirty, and the whole cd is very different from Cradle's "original" style.
But, the cd is a great one...

Fuck Yeh! This is my shit! Fast, Brutal and Satanic. This is probably one of the best extreme metal bands around alomg with this masterpiece. Drums kick ass, guitar riffs are fucking "Kouta" (good) and the singing is devastating. Hail to Dani Filth for his absolute genious efforts at the construction of this cd. Get it or fuck off!

Cradle of Filth - The Principle of Evil Made Flesh
Released on Cacophonous Records in 1994.

So this is the first Cradle of Filth opus. It's very different from what I expected. When I bought "Vempire" (in my opinion the best opus), I thought 'If this is so damn good, I can't see why the debyt isn't'. So I bought it.

Cradle of Filth's the rawest and most primitive release is not what fans of newer Cradle might like. It has simple, but fast guitar riffs with chunky sound of drums (Nicholas might be the source of this 'deathmetally' production). Keyboards are not heard very clearly, but that's good, because they are hideous when they bump in. Listen to the drum & synth break on "Summer Dying Fast". Badass production is very raw, like I said, and practically no fan of newer Cradle gets this album seriously. But you should take this seriously, because it's better than all the new releases. The songs are simple, but people have listened music they don't have to think about through times. Not that I'm patronizing their (members) talents, but this is really worth buying.

My favourite songs are "The Forest Whispers My Name", "One Final Graven Kiss", "A Crescendo of Passion Bleeding", "To Eve the Art of Witchcraft", "In Secret Love We Drown", "A Dream of Wolves in the Snow" and "Summer Dying Fast". Quite a bunch, huh? See now what I mean. Their production could be better, but this is the primitive black metal, and how it should be played.

Music - 88
Lyrics - 90
Playing - 82
Vocalwork - 84
Sound - 82

Overall - 85 out of 100

The worst cradle ever !!! It's so " hey were're playing black metal , aren't we cool? You should avoid this album or at least piss on it in stores. Unbelievable they made such a progress on dusk. This record may stand next to " load " , " reload " and " saint anger ".
superrating : 0.5 out of 5 ( not a zero because the first (intro ) and last track are still ok ).

dude what the fuck is wrong with you? your probably some Kazaa loser and didnt realize that this demo is what started CoF. The Raping of Faith, which you obviously have not heard marks the beginning of the relationship between brutality and melody CoF have used all these years, and if you like the song Beauty Slept in Sodom off Dusk.... then you'll like The Raping of Faith for that's where msot of the guitar lines for Beauty... came from! I strongly recommend it.

"This record may stand next to " load " , " reload " and " saint anger ".

You should be crucified upside down for that comment. Fuck off and die you fucking nu-metaller. This IS the best Cradle cd in my opinion. It is the closest to black metal Cradle ever was and it's a damn shame they didn't stick with it. I am not saying that any of their cd's aren't great because I pretty much like them all, but this is definetly my favorite...especially Of Mist and Midnight Skies.

8.1? This album? Oh my...I think nobody gives a damn if this is or this is not black metal. Why do you have to label everything and everyone? Listen them for what they are, not for what they could be...damn.
One of their greatest albuns ever. 11/10

A lovely album, the best of their discography. Robin Eaglestone and Nick "Warmachine" Barker are GODS!!!!!!!!
The Ryans and Allender, well, I love their style and Dani is the World's GREATEST MOTHERFUCKER! I just love his vocals. BUY or DIE!
The best songs are "Darkness our Bride", "The Forest Whispers My Name", "Black Goddess Rises", "To Eve the Art of Witchcraft", "Of Mist and Midnight Skies", "A Dream of Wolves in the Snow" and "Summer Dying Fast".

'Cruelexistence', I am with you. It seems that some people have no idea of extreme music and think "it's more melodic, so it is better"! One thing I know: the evil and satanic atmosphere that it is contained in this album, cannot be found in any of the next COF releases. This album is total fucking darkness! The lyrics was (and still is) one of the best part of COF, and "The Principle..." is not an exception. Dark poetry at it's best.
A comment to the question of 'Vampyric': Sadly, COF have many enemies, because they managed in 5-6 years to become the most famous black metal band on the planet. But Dani seems to enjoy that, as ANYONE of us would do...
10/10.

Well, what can i say. A fantastic album indeed. A million Dimmu borgir's won't be able to reach Cradle of filth's level even if they tried! don't know why some people hate cradle!! but i definatley love them!! The Best Black metal band in the world.
hands down!!

Review by: blackpianist

Here is the situation:
1- Whoever says this album sucks is gay
2- Whoever loved this album definatley knows what dark music is (I.E. Black Metal)
3- Cradle of filth WAS one of the best Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal bands starting from this album right up until Cruelty and the beast!
4- If you are a Black metalhead who hates the first four albums of cradle then you need some serious help!!!
5- If you don't agree with what i am saying then go stick all ur Dummy burger albums up your ass!

This album deserves a 10/10
HANDS DOWN

Why the sound becomes kind of dirty in this album and in others in primitive black metal? ´cause the recording studios were not the best for the bands didn´t have enough money to pay for their demos. In this case, the studio is a nice one, but respect the sound for black metal has that sound. To me, its a pretty cool beginning for the World´s Most Famous Black Metal Band, not my favorite album (V Empire and Dusk.. are it). Music is for listenig to it, for enjoy it, doesn´t matter Satan or God, if it likes you, its cool... Everyone hears the shit they like...

Ok to all of you fucks who think that COF are Black Metal "your suffering will be legendary even in hell" you fucks have no idea.... COF are a poor excuse for metal in general.. all they have going for them is a legion of poseurs and a marketing for gay tshirts.... this is not true black metal by any means.... and all those who think so are poor excuses to the metal underground.. as for this cd.. the production was better than any metal album of this gothic/metal style (at the time of it's reliese) a couple stand out tracks. "the forest whispers my name/summer dying/the black goddess rises/to eve the art of witchcraft and a kick ass guest apperance from Darron white make this cd a good debut for the filthy fucks. and good female vocals by Ishan's (emperor) wife. (thank god sara wasn't on this one to fuck it up) overall a pretty good gothic/metal cd. BUT NOT A BLACK METAL CD BY ANY FUCKING CHANCE.....

I find it amusing that so many people attack cradle of filth for trying to be black metal. Read an interview with Dani Filth and im sure he will agree.Cradle of filth are not and Never will be black metal what they are is an awesome metal band that really know how to stir up some shit. Honestly the band do this for kicks i mean look at the picture on the back of this album.Seriously. But now for the review. Its actually a really good album sure the production is murky and the sound is low fi (But hey it worked for Ulver didnt it).I think its the keyboard work on this album that really gives it the edge You know they are there but they do not over flow the brutality. If your new to cradle get something like Cruelty and the beast first its much more accesible.

album debut from the band who's changed the history of black metal, musically... the masterpiece who´s marked the begining of the new ways of metal in the world... innovators elements, complicated musical structures, musical and poetry passion with no limits, the masterpiece... i need to say more??... cradle of filth is for black metal like ozzy osbourne is for heavy metal... no more to say...

CDADLE OF FILTH
The Principles of Evil Made Flesh: Gothic Black Metal

The first cd from the true kings of the doomy Gothic Black Metal that will later become the true kings of sellout Metal.

Doomy, eerie and symphonic sounding black metal with an edge, and some female vocals. All the songs are creative and unique but, the cd progresses slow at times and some of the melodies are missing something that you just can't put your finger on. Nic Barker has some creative drum beats on this album. Dani Filth's voice is also a little undeveloped sounding, and the lyrics are very deep and gothic as well as satanic.

7.5/10

one rewiew only for the whole cradle of filth discography, here in the section of his "masterpiece".... the beginning of a commercially cunning attempt to mix sex horror and gothic atmospheres.... it seems like you can't listen to this band without smile at their clownish music if you're not a teenager frightened by, but terribly curious about tour first time.....

One of the best Cradle of Filth albums they have made. The first official release. The title track is alone-enough to satisfy all your black metal needs. They were once great and still are great, just on another level. Its not easy to match up to the effectiveness of this album. Highly recommended to buy.

LOL indeed cradle of filth is a teenager band as it looks like now but that doesnt make me stop listen to this shit ! Their music is kinda special comparing to other bands.. Danis vocals are best on this cd I say. I want to hear wtf he is saying :-)..

One of the best melodic black metal album i ever heard!!!

Review by: Paolo5791915

Oh my WOTANS fucking shiaaaatT. I have loved this album for yeAArs now ! To be serious.. this is probably the best CoF Cd they got and b4 you say CoF sucks you should listen this this one. As some other people says the 4 first albums are definetly the best ( fuck sarah, I really hate your voice (!) ). This is a quite special "black metal". Indeed this album is BM but the newer are definetly nOOT! It is Danis voice ! he combines dark voices with his ultra special weiro other-voice ^^.
Whats the point if all bands makes some BM music ? CoF doesnt. If I want to listen to pure BM I just listen to Darkthrone.. So then, whats the point if 50 bands makes BM music ? All of them sounds quite the same if not even worse after copying other bands. NO ! Make your own style / subgenre --> Success.
This is quite odd, therefore -> success.

Yo, it's Joe!!!
In my opinion, it really sucked! I think Dani's vocals were terrible. Before I bought the album I thought, "Hey, it's how Cradle started. Maybe it will sound good." I was definitely wrong. I honestly thought their demos were better.

This is only good Cradle album. But it ain't good only, it's PERFECT. Starting from 'Vempire' CoF become some bad-tested funny puppets of pop culture. Only 'Principle..' is a seroius music. When you'll hear it you can die, nothing more crazy will never be recorded. All trucks are splendid. CoF could became a aristocracy of all sympho black styles. Now they are just silly clowns listened by a bunch of teen-fans. What a shame. I should stop listenning to 'Principle' knowing what CoF are now but this sounds are such incredible I can't help it.

this cd and all of cof's cd's that follow, yes even ''from the cradle to enslave'' and ''nymphetamine'' are just true masterpieces!! i don't give a fucking shit what genre they are! even if they where opera i would listen to them! yeah! cof kicks ass! ok now the cd. i really like: the forest whispers my name the black goddess rises to eve the art of wichcraft of mist and midnight skies summer dying fast & all the instrumentals on this record. the rest of the songs aren't bad either, but i like these just the most. oh, everybody may have their own opinion but i stick to 10/10 for every cof cd, when it would not be more. i am very curious to their new album ''thornography!'' all heil!

First COF release sounding quite unlike any that came after. More of a heavy guitar lenience distinguishes this album as well as a raw production and generally, a slower tempo. Not their best album by any means but a good start for them with great artwork to accompany it. The drums at the commence of Summer Dying Fast are cool and worth a careful listen. Other standout tracks include Of mist and midnight skies, forest whispers my name and the title track.

there's something i could not understand about the incredible success this album earned when it was out. i was 13, and the power of 'principle' overwheld me. I told everybody how cradle of filth were the greatest band in the world...
one year later 'vempire' strenghtened my passion more and more, I was able to listen to 'queen of winter, throned' for 30 times in loop...
again one year later, it was 'dusk and her embrace' time...
and finally, one year later, I didn't bought nor listen to their fourth album
...and now I understand the power of cradle of filth: IT'S MUSIC FOR VIRGIN TEENS THAT MASTURBATE EVERY DAY AND EXCITE THEMSELVES WITH HORROR AND PORNOGRAPHY.

Ah, Cradle of Filth, that one band from England that people either love or hate. Why is there no middle ground for this group of ambitious brits beats me, but this is not what this review is about.

After a couple of Death Metal tapes in which one can notice their sound evolving (especially on Total Fucking Darkness), the band finally got a record deal on Cacophonous and thus they managed to release what is probably their best album: The Principle of Evil Made Flesh!

Funnily enough, the record was not intended to be so raw, but it seems that it ended up like this due to limited budget resources. Even so, it seems to be their most praised record in back metal circles.

As for the music itself, it's rather simplistic compared to nowadays Cradle standards. At certain parts the guitars have a rather Death Metal touch and sound really primitive (The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, A Crescendo of Passion and Bleeding). Also, the number of keyboard or ambiental instrumentals is bigger even for them (4 of them!). A Dream of Wolves in the Snow is interesting in the sense that it features clean vocals this time (courtesy of Darren White) as well as being even more melodic, almost in the style of The Blood Divine. Regarding the drums, Nicholas Barker is proving his master skills even at his young age. And bassist Robin Graves shines in many bits of songs.

All in all, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh is a strong debut album for what would become Britain's greatest extreme metal act. It is definitely a special album (mostly due to the way it was recorded) and hardly would the band have such quality songwriting.
Rating: 10/10
Favorite tracks: The Forest Whispers My Name, To Eve the Art of Witchcraft, Of Mist and Midnight Skies, A Dream of Wolves in the Snow, Summer Dying Fast
