EDGE OF SANITY - CRIMSON II

Dan Swanö didn't even try to recreate, or re-enact a copy to the legendary "Crimson"-release, but made an independent and multi-dimensional modern death metal release of "Crimson II".

The feeling is somewhat the same as in the original "Crimson"-opus, but this sounds a lot more mature, developed and professional - most likely because of the addition of musically eloquent synthesizers, and more professional and beautiful clean vocalwork. Also the compositions and song structures are more mature. There are many kind of styles mixed in "Crimson II" - some parts are resemblent to Soilwork, some to Opeth and some to Suffocation. The usage of keyboards make the recording sound more sophisticated, but sometimes they are used too much.

The thing which makes the listening process a lot easier is that the album is divided into 9 songs and 44 parts. To listen a song of 40-minute duration is not really satisfactory, so therefore "Crimson II" is easier to listen than its predecessor. There are of course riffs which have been used in the first part, but those make the album sound familiar in a good way.

Overall, "Crimson II" is undoubtedly the cornerstones of the year 2003. My picks would be: "Incantation", "Achilles' Heel" and "Aftermath".

Before i hear that album, i was so curious, how would it sound like, since its predessesor Crimson I was the best track i have ever heard till now, and it is my all time favorite, so i was wondering, will it just be a continuation to this epic? well actually i found out that this album is different, not as a concept, but as maturity, the band now knows what they want to do very well, and they know very well how to achieve it, by adding some synths and some great clear vocals, the melodies are great, great song structures, much more organized.

As the music is driven from the original crimson, it sounds great, and the additions is also wonderfull. this album is a masterpiece by all measures, and for sure it is a must buy. it deserves more than money.

My rating: 20/10

I was really surprised first time I heared this album. The songs are very varied and absolutely not boring at all. The riffs are wonderful and I must say Dan has made his own genre! This is 100% melodical music. They main thing that makes this album so different is probable the very good guitar-playing and good keyboard. If you like melodical/death metal this is a must buy. They have successed again !
