This is one of the darkest piece of music I have ever heard. Even if you know Elend, this will enchant you and/or make you slit your wrist!
While the previous trilogy of Elend was neo-classical music dealing with Despair, Rebellion, and lastly, Death, this is something different.
The music can be compared to the darkest moments of Dead Can Dance (Within the Realms of a Dying Sun, for example), with very good orchestration and production. But there is no full orchestra, only violins, flute etc. Even the beautiful sopranos have disappeared, they sing only some choirs here and there.
Due to this changes it is much easier to get into the music, but it will take you a lot of time afterwards to fully dig into the details.
If you buy the CD, buy the Digipak version, since the bonus track (Silent Slumber: A God that breeds pestilence (what a title!))contains female vocals, and is the best track on the album alongside with Charis.

this is probably one of the best albums i will ever lay my hands on in my life. it really struck my heart. the music is nowhere close to metal, it's soft, atmospheric and... classical (perhaps no wonder since it's neo-classical music :P).

the lyrics are mostly in english but with a little french in some of the songs. lucky me my mom translated the french parts of it. the vocals are wonderful, perfectly sung and it fits extremely well with the music.

but what is it that makes this album so great? i don't know for sure. but ever since i first heard it i've always thought of it as more than just music. i've thought about it as art, like nothing i have ever experienced before.

the album as a whole could be described as a dream. at first a dream full of mourning and sadness but as the album progrsses the dream changes and turns into a fearful and terrible dream, a dream where your darkest nightmares come true. and in the end the dream changes again and turns into a dream full of hopelessness and sheer lust for death.

if you're not a narrow-minded metalhead who disgusts anything that isn't metal. you should check this out. and when you listen to it for the first time, listen to it in the darkness.

this is THE album.

10/10

This album is great indeed... thus now (when i write this) I only reached the "Under War-Broken Trees" song. A first time listen and I can say that this is unique! The guy who gave this album to me said that it's not so great and when I put it into my CD player I didn't expect much... but now... I think it's the Greatest since "Lecons de Tenebres". Dark, depressive, with a cold wind of doom. Just... another side of Elend. A new one to us...
Excuse me while the music takes me...

Oh boy this is Pure Ficking Darkness in one single CD, this could be easily be the best part of the whole trilogy of the Officium Tenebrarum, the way these guys managed to create a beautifully orchestated chaos is simply great, the two first releases are also splendid, these people really know what they are doing. Imagine the best way to see the Doreīs engraving, or the best way to feel as if you were falling in Hell, being consumed by the flames, blinded by the unlight, doomed to a bitter eternity... thatīs Elend, thatīs the Umbersun.

I'm VERY DISAPPOINTED about this dull and grey piece! No ambitious, Anyway Elend are still Elend, I love this band, so I gave 7/10 no more.
