Morningrise is OPETH at its finest and most sophisticated. This CD contains some of the best music ever written by OPETH, such as To Bid you Farewell, Night and the Silent Water and Black Rose Immortal. The intensity in this album is quite semalessly matched and followed with beauty, and that's what makes it superior to ... Orchid.

Sometimes words canīt just express the utmost aura of divinity that an album can communicate to you. This is the case with OPETHīs "Morningrise".
"Superb and overwhelming progressive dark metal" could be a definition to this masterpiece, but since I donīt like those labels at all, Iīll try to describe the immense music inside: long songs, structure weird and surprising, excellent harmonies that guitars weave without end throughout the album, stirring acoustic parts that remind us the 70īs prog bands like Camel, a normal voice that is utterly shivering, an agressive voice that features madness and despair as only a few ones can, mysterious lyrics and artwork, great bass parts that frolic behind the main melodic lines, drums pounding and caressing the songs like a smooth hand in a silky cloak... the music fills my room and I feel like fleeing towards another dimension far from here. My senses reel, my heart stumbles and something invades my soul every time I hear this album.
This is in my humble opinion the best OPETH album ever, inspiration possessed their minds while they were doing it like it never did or will do. Some people disagree, but itīs up to you to make your choice. "Masterpiece" is a word too little to describe this CD. Words wonīt be enough. Just let the music whisper and scream to your ears.
I recommend "Morningrise" to every listener that likes good, gloomy music without dubs of any kind.

Right there in the league of Swedish melodic death metal bands with really long songs (I need to coin a name for that genre and save a few keystrokes), Opeth releases this, their second album. There are five songs total on the album and not one of them is shorter than ten minutes. That right there should scare off the attention-span impaired.

Now that they're surfing elsewhere, let's discuss exactly what Opeth puts forth. If you happen to be an avid follower of the European, especially Swedish scene, the name Opeth isn't a total mystery. Singer/guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt has appeared on Edge of Sanity records and in return former E.O.S. mainman Dan Swano helped record this epic piece. Musically, and even within one song, these guys go all over the map. Generally the songs flow well from one part to the next, though individual songs are not immediately noticeable. The twin guitars work well with each other, creating some great melodies in the guitars, and often lasping into very tasteful acoustic moods. In my opinion, it's difficult to write on guitar intricate songs that fully involve the listener, but Opeth manages to keep your attention. The bass tends to loop around the guitar lines and reminded me lot (in tone, maybe) of the old American experimental thrash band Watchtower. Singer Akerfeldt has a wide range of vocal approaches from hoarse black metal screams to somber melodies.

The best thing about this album is that each new listen further enhances the absolute majesty of the music. Soon you'll begin to anticipate the movements of the pieces and be drawn into it. I admit I fell in love with this album while listening to it during a huge sunrise lightning storm in Utah. Trust me, the music completely fit into the scheme of things. Absolutely recommended.

OPETH - MORNINGRISE
Released on Candlelight Records in 1996.

"Morningrise" is Opeth's second album and it is one of the most respected albums I know. My expectations were high when I laid my hands down on this CD. This album has the best riffs ever made by Opeth and the sound quality is also nice (which is really rare for the early albums).

Mikael's vocalwork on this album is not as good as one might expect. Don't get me wrong, he is still doing great job in the microphone. As always, the guitarwork is astoundingly sophisticated but nevertheless, the vocals are Mikael's specialty. What really hit me, was the surprisingly talented bass guitar work on this CD made by Johan de Farfalla.

There are two songs which easily belong to the Top10 of the century. These hymns are "Advent" and "To Bid You Farewell". The first one is a kind of an In Flames -riffing song and "To Bid You Farewell" is sooo beautiful from the first notes to the very ending chords. They are Opeth's finest pieces.

There are too many riffs which can be easily guessed (especially in "Nectar" and "Black Rose Immortal" which somehow seemed to be Mikael's fave). They lower a bit the final grade.

Opeth's finest crownjewel "Morningrise" was one of the highlights of the year1996. As anticipated after the tremendous "Orchid" -album, Opeth was bound to fail their 'sequel'. But they didn't.

Marking : 9/10

Morningrise is probably one of the best technical death metal (with a hell of lot more infulences) cd. Ive only heard this from opeth, but after i hearded this, i just wanted more, more... I personally like the accoustic parts the best.. "To Bid You Farewell" is probably one of the most beatiful song i have ever heard in my entire life... I cant wait till i see them in Inferno festival 2003...

I'm going to make a lot of friends saying this. I hate Opeth. I own this album, and musically it is very good. I can't say anything bad about the music. Everything they wanted to achieve with it, I am convinced they did. The acoustic tone is perfect and true to old prog. The leads and melodies are smooth as hell and the bass does some extremely crazy stuff with odd rhythms. This must have taken forever to write. I heard Mikael talk about how Opeth is the greatest band in the world once in an interview and I started seeing all these Opeth fans spring up everywhere. Straight to the point-I like being the kind of metalhead who likes shit other metalhead's do not-but aside from that-in all honesty, I seriously dislike this band because when I first heard it I took in something cool. Then I realized how incredibly fruity the band members are and their fans are the kids who don't know anything about any other OLD swedish bands as well as kids who would rather make these guys rockstars than musicians hence the newer albums SUCK. I would just assume listen Atheist for an hour and Bela Fleck for a half an hour than sit through an hour of Opeth again. Opeth has succeeded in what they want to do-I'm sorry I didn't see their ambitions earlier.

This is one of the best Metal albums ever! I Think it's not th best album of Opeth. I Think Blackwater Park is.
But the score for me is 10 out of 10

This (for me) is simply the BEST Opeth album!!
I love the others very much but for some reason, this
album just gives me the goose-pimples...

very good progresive melodic atmospheric death metal.
to my opinion it lacks the emotion it could have.
and the vocals are done very well, but their not something to remember too much.

What can i say. It's the best album ever !!!!! Opeth ruuuuuuuuleeeeeez !!!

There once was a period a endored this album, WAS. It sounds like the end of a period in my ears. I always found that Orchd and Morningrise were very different than the other (better) albums.
A sometimes crappy production, a thin guitarline (but good drums) is the reason for it.
The sound is a lot mor raw then al the other albums. Only Dirge for November on the Blackwater park record reminds me of the early days of Opeth.
It still is quite a good album with good piano and drum stuff. Also the surprising clean vocals are very good. This was a real beauty. When they re-released the record i heared the last song.... FUCKING CRAP!!!! an extra bonus track. Why do the put an unproffesional FUCKING crap song on such a beautiful album!!! why.......!!!!
It really breaks the climax of this album.
Black Rose Immortal is a huge beauty, but i don't like The Night And The Silent Water any more and thats a huge part for an album with 5 songs on it!
But the beauty's Advent and To Bid You Farewell are stunning, absolute beauty's.
So i cleared up my mind and listened to it again....
77/100

I bought and listened this album first in 1998 and this album fuckin' change my life ( as I wrote in Eternity album) I cannot believe in my ears when I listened it.
a combination of black/doom/acoustic music and some jazzy parts. I still cannot find a band like opeth's creativity
god-like
10/10

Opeth's best album ever, in my opinion. the longest songs, the most verious album, the most shifting melodies- especially 'Advent' and 'Black Rose Immortal', the longer the better... every bit of it is unforgettable. it has that old rock pink floyd style death metal combination that I love.

I didn't know what the word "perfection" meant, so I went to see on the dictionary and it said: Opeth

With high hopes I bought my first Opeth. What a disappointment it was. I actually sold the album. I'm sorry - metal; to me, is about aggressivity, focus and coherence. None of this is delivered on this album. Yes, I've actually listened to it twice to check if I could be wrong. I wasn't. I'm usually rather mild and sensitive on my reviews but really, please listen before you buy. Opeth's succes - I don't deny them any BTW, they obviously put a lot of thought into their music (too much so...?) - won't be marred by one bad review so I think it's safe to add some counterpoint here...

This one is also a masterpiece. Just like all the other Opeth albums. This album contains the longest Opeth song ever to be recorded. Black rose immortal is a staggering 20 min long. And the greatest thing is that it never gets boring. just like the other Opeth songs on this album. Get this masterpiece of an album. I still say that Still life is the best but this one is pretty damn close.

10/10

Opeth-Morningrise is the best album ever created by man.

I have a collection of more than a thousand albums but no album comes close to this one in terms of the music.

"Morningrise" has to be one of Opeth's best works and songs such as "Advent", "Black Rose Immortal", and "The Night and the Silent Water" have a very "metal" feel. They are longer than the songs of some other metal bands but nevertheless still make a more artistic impression in the dark pool of metal music.
