I was ecstatic when someone gave me a (CD-R) copy of this release because I didn't like the way Ulver went after "Nattens Madrigal" but worshipped all of their releases previous to "William Blake's". I expected this to resemble "Bergtatt" in sound, I should have been smarter, because no 2 Ulver releases sound alike. "Vargnatt" has a very primitive and quiet production, but it is a demo, so that is excusable. The guitars can get VERY shrill, however. The music is hard to describe, because it sounds like no other band/release that I have heard before. There are many acoustic guitars here to balance out the raw electric ones and even one totally acoustic instrumental piece (Trollskogen). The vocals remind me of Atilla's on Mayhem's "De Mysteriis...".

Get this if you liked Ulver's extreme metal/folk releases. Get it at all costs. It is a unique and wonderful release.

"Trollskogen" is absolutely a higlight on this album ! Its veery beautiful just like "Ulverytternes kamp" and all other tracks too ! Ulver is musically and I love his guitar playing alot just as his voice. The recording - quality could be better though. Thats the only thing that makes this album a little worse. He should re-make this demo "album" just as it is but with better sound..
Even some of his screams sounds just like a woolf haha !
Perfect !

I almost think that this demo is better than Bergtatt.
The black metal feeling is really amazing, so raw and evil. I only wish that the lyrics were availible.
