Zyklon - AEON (Candlelight, 2003) (www.zyklontribe.com)

The follow-up to the much appraised album World Ov Worms (2001, Peaceville) without a doubt honors the traditions of it's predecessor. Guitarists Samoth (Emperor) and Destructhor, drummer Trym (also Emperor), and brand new vocalist Secthdamon deliver a powerhouse of new wave black metal tracks. The lyrics were written by Bard "Faust" Eithun, conjuring up some of the most controversial yet most thought provoking lyrics in the world of Norwegian Black Metal.

The album kicks off with 'Psyklon Aeon', finding traces of ex-Emperor Samoth's composition here. Voclist Secthdamon delivers different vocal styles and tempos here, ranging from death metal, even producing hardcore. A more Americanized sound, compared to former vocalist Daemon (Limbionic Art), who also makes a few guest apperences on the album. From "Two Thousand Years" to "The Prophetic Method", Bard's lyrics continue to deliver shock and awe therapy, with lines like "This is Machiavellian Strategy, an extreme form of tragedy". It definately takes more than a feeble mind to even begin to fathom the misanthropic intentions of this writing divinity.

The album ends on a more downtune note, with "An Ecclectic Manner", with more synthesizer usage here. Zyklon has definately risen atop many bands, defying many obstacles upon paths they decide to undertake. I say, from here on in, the path they choose is their own, with distinct sounds to forever change the world of Norgwegian Black Metal.

One of the greatest things after Emperor is Zyklon. Now Emperor has broken up the fan has a pretty good Emperor look-a-like album in his hands with Aeon.
Much Emperor influences with a little bit of a dissapoining last song, it's sounds like it has gothic influences to me. And that's very weird to listen to after all the violence on this album. After all a superb album.

90/100

after listening this powerfull cd. you do not need more reasons to kill the unworthy human waste, personally i liked
the concept of AEON more than it's sound because is more nowadays and not boring stuff ...sound very good, especialy Psyklon Aeon and No Names Above The Names , but not approaching to the level reached with World ov Worms.
Anyway SUPPORT ZYKLON THILL DEATH !!!
Dr.Psyklon is the new breath in extreme metall!!!
Kill your selves if you think you should...but not listen if you can't!!!

Dom you like it hard and extreme? Thought so. While Emperor were GODS, Zyklon is now the way to go.

Trym shows us more of his superb drumming skills, and how Zamoth, Sechtdamon and Destruchtor got him to slow down, I have no idea. The title track 'Psyklon Aeon' has Emperor influences all through it. Zamoth delivers some hard hitting chords that will make you grin from ear to ear. Destruchtor's solos, and in peticular the note choices, are brilliant. 'Core Solution' is probably the most death metal that they will go, and the opening of 'Subtle Manipulation' reminds me of British death/black metallers Akercocke. Did I mention the new vokillist, Sechtdamon? His death metal grunts, whilst not being as 'full on' as someone like Karl Sanders, are good nontheless. His black metal shrieks could be improved though. Bard Faust's lyrics suit the music well.

Zyklon took a completley different direction with 'Aeon' than 'World ov Worms.' And I think it's worked well. The songs should work well live.

This album is weak. It has a strong American sound that makes it flavourlesss in comparison with the previous World ov Worms. It is just your average death metal album with no glimmer on it. It has lost that European sound, which used to make Zyklon a more refined death metal band, meaning that now u can find senseless brutality and nothing more, plus there are no more special voice or urban style sound samples that used to add a more modernist touch in the previous album. The vocals are mostly the ones that ruin the album, they resemble hardcore growls. Thank god for the lyrics and for the outro track, which most people surely despise. Of course it has nothing to do with the style of the album. That track keeps me on the edge of my seat, just dying to hear the next Zyklon.
Until then, disillusion, Aeon: 5/10
