Echoes From The Ground

1. Night Fears Morning

Take it all away, I have walked alone
And wept in silent thought upon the cobblestone
They ridicule my faith, the learned of this rich establishment
I fear they hold the truth, that my beliefs are but imaginings
Night fears morning

My God, take it all away, all I have to say
Thoughts inside of me want to cease to be
This time they've gone too far, they've taken all my solemn dignity
This time they gone too far, they tore the veil, the pain goes on
Night fears morning

I must make my way to the holy lands
Aboard a merchant ship to search with my own hands
The soil will hold the keys to unlock all the bindings of my heart
My dreams will be assured, veracity will have its daylight
Life fears mourning

2. Over The Sea

We sailed from southern England to the coast of Palestine
I stepped upon the shore and gazed back across the brine
For my own impress I ventured to explore the Holy Land
With little more than my faith I turned and made my way across the sand

Making my way inland to the sites I have heard bespoiled
I seek echoes of the past, things deep within the soil
All my life, all my days, taken with the need to raise the dead

I journeyed through the heat to the mountain of Nebo
To survey all that lay in the Jordan valley below
And there laid out like a blanket was the land that Moses saw
The promise of Sinai fulfilled to those that went before

Making my way inland to the sites I have heard bespoiled
All my time, all my faith, stands upon the need to raise the ...
All my life, all my days, taken with the need to raise the dead

Away from the darkness, over the sea,
My greatest fear is that this darkness has followed me

The doubts which had inspired my quest
I'm certain were stalking me in this place
And were even now determined to steal my very soul

All my time, all my faith, stands upon the need to raise the
All my life, all my days, taken with the need to raise the dead

Out of the darkness, into the daylight
I find in my way that life is worth living

3. The Chosen Land

Over time they've forsaken that great war crime of the ages
I dig and toil with bleeding hands and recoil
At the thought of mine own sunken faith
My own heart is as hard as this land
Which has been chosen by the Ancient of Days

Over time I embrace all the words sublime of the pages
I rend the soil with bleeding hands and recoil
At the thought of my life

Now as I stand at the edge of the field of Armageddon
I understand warfare that's been
And wars that are yet to be seen now
I understand warfare now

Over time I embrace all the words sublime of the pages
I rend the soil with bleeding hands and recoil
At the thought of mine own sunken faith
My own soul is as dry as this land
Which has been chosen by the Ancient of Days

Over time they've forsaken that great war crime of the ages
I dig and toil with bleeding hands and recoil
At the thought of these fields of blood turned to dust

4. They Tend To Die

Our Lord's enemies, they found Him in Gethsemane
They took God's only Son from the olive grove
And I decry, that which is breathing tends to die

Oh my Lord, his last hours of sorrow
I implore my hope for tomorrow

Our Lord's enemies, they mocked Him as they bowed their knees
They put God's only Son in a crown of thorns
And I decry, that which is breathing tends to die

Oh my Lord, I hope I can find you
I deplore the way that they bind you

Our Lord's enemies, they killed Him on a torture tree
They sent God's only Son to a lowly grave
And I decry, that which is breathing tends to die

5. I

I have life, I have time, I
I have life, I have time, I

I stood inside the cave by the mound of the Skull
Examined that which was interred
The bones in this grave were human and whole
My mind held doubts but my hands were undeterred

I have time, I
I have life, I have time, I

The bones smooth and white had lain within the earth
As aeons passed overhead
I brought them to the sunlight to view them with more care
The years that passed, well, they were kind towards their dead

I have life, I
I have time, I have life, I

And as I pulled the bones one by one from the torn burial cloth
I wondered to myself "Did he truly rise from the dead
Or could these bones that I hold in my trembling hands
Be all that remains of Christ?"

6. My Failing Heart

Evil calls to me, reaching out through eternity
Evil takes away all the faith that I own today
Demons taunt my soul, throw my heart in this wretched hole
Jesus calls to me ... I answer "No"

My failing heart is cold unto myself
My own convictions have not been proven
My failing heart has called unto myself
It lives in hope that I might find my way
It hopes in vain that I might find my way

As I stand on the edge of the Sea which is Dead
And ponder the fate of Gomorrah
I wonder upon which edge my soul will be standing tomorrow
I've passed through Jericho to the sands of Judea
To travel through wild lands seeking answers I fear, God

My failing heart is cold unto myself
My own convictions have not been proven
My failing heart has called unto myself
It lives in hope that I might find my way
It hopes in vain that I might find my ...

Evil calls to me, tears the face off my destiny
Evil takes away all the words I had come to pray
Daylight finds me here, 'neath this encroaching atmosphere
Demons call to me, I answer

My failing heart is cold unto myself
My own convictions have not been proven
My failing heart has called unto myself
It hopes in vain that I might find my way
It lives in hope that I might find my way
I've found my way

7. Echoes

The morning has nothing to fear from the night

Reaching the monastery of St Catherine
The burning bush where Moses spoke with his God
The chamber of skulls of the monks, they who had gone before
The library of early Christian texts and the pathway of repentance
Steps cut into rock by monks so they could
Climb to the peak and commune with their God

As I climb the long pathway of repentance myself
Towards the peak of Sinai in the still dark hours of the morn
I yearn for the daylight which will tame my hesitations

My soul had hungered for the truth throughout this aching quest
And as I watched the sun rise over Sinai for the first time in my whole life
I realised it shed its light not only on the earth
But also on the darkness of my aged heart within
Now was the time to shine
